Beach cleanup set for July 5

Post Date:06/24/2020 10:00 AM

FROM KEEP PCB BEAUTIFUL

Join Keep PCB Beautiful at Beach Access 5 just west of Schooner’s on Gulf Drive, from 9-11 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, for the 3rd Annual Robbie Atchinson Memorial Beach Cleanup.

Keep PCB Beautiful started as a group of transplants that shared a passion for our beaches and the wildlife with which we share them. Robbie Atchinson moved to Panama City Beach several years ago with his wife, Mary, and two of their children, Layla and Miley, fulfilling a dream that was driven by the same passion. Robbie lost his battle with esophageal cancer in June of 2018 and left our Keep PCB Beautiful “family” with a void.

“Robbie so loved this beach that he came here through the years, promising himself that if nothing else, he would retire and die here, and so he did. He was so passionate about cleanups, he would often intervene, when he could, to educate others on our responsibility to the wildlife and environment,” commented Mary Atchinson, Robbie’s wife.

The best way we can think of to honor him is by continuing to join together and celebrate his passion for Panama City Beach and it’s beaches by cleaning them up and keeping them beautiful and safe for our wildlife. We chose the Sunday after July 4 because we felt it would do the most good after the major holiday. This year is the 3rd annual Robbie Atchinson Memorial Beach Cleanup, last year we had 40 volunteers pick up 200 pounds of trash.

The group will walk the beach and pick up trash on Sunday, July 5, starting at 9 a.m. for two hours and meet back at Beach Access 5. There will be raffle tickets available for purchase to win prizes including a free scuba certification class from Red Alert Diving. Keep PCB Beautiful will have some buckets, pickers, and water stations to fill up reusable water bottles.

The group will also have plastic gloves available for those that want them and we will sanitize supplies before and after the event. If volunteers want to wear masks they are welcome to do so. Everyone is invited to attend and help us celebrate Robbie’s passion, our beaches, and keeping PCB beautiful.

Keep PCB Beautiful is a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. The group’s vision is to make Panama City Beach a clean and beautiful place in which to live, work, and visit and to support environmental and conservation initiatives. Keep PCB Beautiful is working to clean up and green up from the streets to the beach. Hoping to inspire individuals and businesses to improve the community and natural environment.
