Panama City Beach police and fire responded to the beach ER at 11111 Panama City Beach Parkway this morning with a report of an exposure to an unknown substance. First responders remain on the scene and the ER has been shut down for what could be several hours while decontamination is underway. Several people were possibly exposed to the substance and are exhibiting symptoms, including first responders and medical personnel. Some have been transferred to the hospital for treatment. Authorities remain on the scene investigating.
This weekend is Florida Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. (May 29-June 4) Critical supplies such as water, medicine, flashlights, batteries and generators are tax free. All residents are encouraged to have a supply kit that lasts a minimum of seven days. Hurricane season is June 1-November 30.
Police Chief Drew Whitman talks to the media about the City's plans to bring in 40 additional law enforcement officers this weekend and partner with businesses to prevent large gatherings. The City sent letters to businesses where crowds have tended to gather and problems exist, asking them to employ private security. Temporary lighting is also being brought in near Circle K to light the area up. The City also plans to create a Citizen Advisory Group to assist with public safety initiatives. Due to construction on Phase 2 of Bay Parkway, the trail head and parking lot to Gayle's Trails on Gulf Boulevard, will be closed for 90 days beginning April 8.
