Prescribed burns at Conservation Park scheduled
The City of Panama City Beach is scheduled to conduct prescribed burns in certain areas within the City’s 2,900 acre Conservation Park starting the week of December 2. Weather permitting, burns will start at approximately 10 a.m. on December 4-5 with no burning scheduled for weekends. Additional burns will occur as conditions permit over the next several weeks.
The park will remain open to the public though access will be restricted to certain areas. Signage is installed which indicates detours around closed areas. The entrance to Conservation Park is located 1.1 mile west of State Road 79 and 1.3 miles north of Panama City Beach Parkway.
Prescribed burning provides a safe way to apply a natural process, ensure ecosystem health, and reduce wildfire risk. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife. The burns at Conservation Park are a critical element of the park management plan as the City continues the process of slowly transforming the site from its former silvaculture (tree farming) composition to a more natural condition.
