Pre-bid meeting for new fire station draws nine potential bidders

Post Date:01/03/2019 3:00 PM

Representatives from nine construction firms attended a mandatory pre-bid meeting Thursday at City Hall for the construction of a new fire station, and toured the Nautilus Street construction site immediately afterwards.

Officials said they were excited to see so many potential bidders, including familiar faces, as well as some new companies, to help ensure the City gets the best price for the construction of the new 15,000-square-foot fire station. The project also includes site work, parking, access, exterior lighting, landscaping, irrigation and signage for the City's third fire station, located at the intersection of Nautilus and Fairway which leads into the Colony Club subdivision. The next phase of Bay Parkway will also connect to this Nautilus intersection.

Fire Chief Larry Couch said the new station is needed due to the growth of the City, which is home to more than 17 million visitors each year. The new station is just east of the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant on Gulf Boulevard and a driveway for employee use will connect the two City facilities. It is also located near the midway point for the City's two existing fire stations. Construction is expected to begin in late February and the new station should be complete in early 2020.

Bids will be received until 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the City Hall Annex, where they will be opened and read publicly. The City shall award the contract to the lowest responsive and responsible bidder; provided, however, the City reserves the right to award the contract to a bidder who is not the lowest responsive and responsible bidder if the City determines in its reasonable discretion that another bid offers the City a better value based upon the reliability, quality of service, or product of such other bidder.
